They didn’t have enough eggs

We are on the long airplane ride from San Francisco to Taipei. 14 hours is a long time to be anywhere, let alone these cramped seats.

Learning to sleep on a plane comes easy to some. Isaiah seems to be able to sleep anywhere. My recollection of our trip earlier this year was that he slept all 52 hours of the bus ride between Chile and Paraguay. Elyce has it down too. She pretended her airline blanket was a comforter and somehow fell asleep in the middle of the first meal, her spoon still clutched in her hand. Stacyann and Alyssa both had that dazed look in their eyes after they woke up and Andrew and Matthew apparently cuddled through the night, which makes us all smile.

Kona found relief in my iPod and noise-canceling headphones. She slept on my shoulder and that brought me peace too. She continues to look at my watch this morning commenting on what her fellow students are doing back home. “They are in math right now,” she exclaimed, “and I am eating breakfast!”

Speaking of breakfast, she got the last scrambled eggs and sausage breakfast left on the plane. They gave me fish and rice soup. I am not a very finicky eater but I just wasn’t able to down this soup at this time. I am very thankful for the SBS girls showing up to the airport with care packages for us. Amy gave me a breakfast bar that is now meeting my nutritional needs.

Not much to share yet except for random thoughts. I wrote some about this trip on my personal blog, which you can read at http://captainestes.blogspot.com.

Here are a few more observations:

* The students are learning to travel smarter. They all just took toothbrushes out of their carry-ons and made a beeline to the bathroom after breakfast.
* One of the flight attendants led a woman to her seat as we got on the airplane but for some reason turned around and shushed her, putting his finger to his lips and speaking harshly to her in Chineese. Everytime the woman passes by our seats Kona and I put our finger to our lips and shush her as well. Too bad we don’t know Chineese.
* Isaiah just got up for the first time since we sat down. His legs don’t quite work yet. When he walked by Kona and I shushed him.
* There is a woman on the movie screen doing exercises. The instructions told us that we should do them along with her. It is quite frustrating as there is no room in the economy class to turn sideways, let alone do the stretching moves they want us to do. There also aren’t any eggs.
